
Timeline of Solar and Battery Standards
Twenty years of solar standards have left Australia with systems that look completely different depending on when they went in. This course turns that history into a practical skill: reading cabling, isolators, connectors, earthing and labelling to date an installation and judge it against the rules of its time.
If you’re working on existing systems — servicing, upgrading, adding a battery, inspecting — you constantly have to answer the same question: was this compliant when it was installed, and what does that mean for what I’m about to do? Without old copies of the standards on a shelf, that’s hard, and there hasn’t been one place that puts the whole timeline together.
Pat walks through four eras, from early grid-connect in 2005 to the modern era of AS/NZS 5033:2021 and AS/NZS 4777.1:2024, showing what each looked like on site and why the rules changed. Just as importantly, he covers the traps: CEC guidelines that ran ahead of the standards, messy transition dates, state-by-state differences, partial upgrades and recall replacements — so you build good judgement rather than false certainty.

Nuances, limitations and traps
Guidelines ahead of standards, irregular dates, state interpretation, partial upgrades and non-compliant installs in every era.
Era one: 2005–2011
Early grid-connect — general wiring rules, improvised DC cabling, minimal earthing and mixed connectors.
Era two: 2012–2013
The big shift — PV1-F cable and HD conduit, deliberate earthing, rooftop isolators nationally, MC4 becomes standard.
Era three: 2014–2020
The industry matures — better labelling and sealing, the 2018 amendments, and batteries arrive with AS/NZS 5139:2019.
Era four: 2021–2026
The 5033 rewrite — disconnection points, controlled DC routing, and the 2024 labelling changes.
