Testing a Battery Installation

When a system switches to backup, it has to stay as safe as it was on the grid: RCDs still working, no current flowing where it shouldn’t. This course shows you the two tests under AS/NZS 4777.1 that prove it — parallel earthing paths and neutral continuity — the way Pat does them in the field.

These tests aren’t hard. But Pat still sees plenty of battery systems where they’ve been skipped or done incorrectly, and that leads to safety issues, failed inspections and damage to your reputation. With battery rebates ramping up, the scrutiny is only increasing.

You’ll follow two real installations step by step: putting the system into backup mode, running a load test with nothing fancier than a hairdryer, measuring current on the active, neutral and earth, and proving the neutral runs all the way back to the main neutral bar. One system passes cleanly. The other shows current on the MEN link the moment it goes into backup — and you’ll see exactly what that looks like and what it means.
